Midwife Match

For the MIT Hackathon (2024) project, MidMatch, we aimed to design a platform that enhances the matchmaking experience for hackathon participants, helping them find compatible teammates efficiently. Through user research, surveys, and competitor analysis, we identified common pain points in team formation and developed a solution that simplifies and optimizes this process.

MidWife Match Project

Problem

In the U.S. and Canada, access to midwifery services is limited due to a shortage of certified midwives, inconsistent regulations, and a healthcare system that prioritizes hospital-based births. Many expectant parents, especially those in rural or underserved areas, struggle to find midwives or receive adequate prenatal and postpartum care. This lack of access often results in overburdened hospitals, increased medical interventions, and reduced birth autonomy for parents seeking alternative birthing options. Additionally, there is a significant lack of awareness and education about midwifery services, leaving many parents without the support they need.

Solution

MidMatch is a digital platform designed to bridge the gap between expectant parents and certified midwives, doulas, and birth support professionals. By leveraging smart matchmaking technology, MidMatch connects parents with midwives based on location, preferences, birthing philosophy, and medical needs. The platform provides detailed profiles, availability tracking, real-time chat, and educational resources, ensuring that parents can make informed decisions about their birthing experience. By simplifying the process of finding and booking midwives, MidMatch empowers families with greater choice, accessibility, and personalized maternity care.

Ideation

During the ideation phase, we focused on identifying key challenges in midwifery access and envisioning a solution that simplifies the process for expectant parents. We conducted brainstorming sessions, competitor analysis, and user journey mapping to understand pain points and opportunities in the maternity care ecosystem. Key considerations included:

From these insights, we conceptualized MidMatch as a smart midwife matchmaking platform with features such as personalized recommendations, real-time availability tracking, and integrated communication tools.

User Personas

Created detailed personas representing our primary users: First-time mother, working professional, looking for a holistic and personalized birthing experience

User Personas

User Stories

Developed comprehensive user stories to guide feature development and prioritization.

"As a busy professional, I want an efficient way to communicate with midwives without long phone calls or in-person visits."
"As a first-time mom, I want to see verified reviews and experiences from other parents so that I can trust the midwife I choose."
